Avatar 2 Passes Spider-Man: No Way Home at The Box Office

Avatar: The Way of Water has passed Spider-Man: No Way Home at the global box office to become the sixth highest grossing movie in history. The sequel to 2009’s blockbuster Avatar from director James Cameron is inching its way to the top five at this rate, though it remains to be seen if it will manage to top its predecessor and become the highest-grossing movie of all time.

According to DiscussingFilm, Avatar: The Way of Water has surpassed Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s $1.92 billion international box office gross and appears to be closing in on Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, both currently sitting at a little over $2 billion.

It’s likely that Avatar: The Way of Water will continue to top the box office for the next few weeks with no signs of it slowing down. Cameron seems to be banking on it climbing its way to the very top, but we’ll only know how that turns out in the coming months. Avengers: Endgame and Avatar currently sit in second and first place, respectively.

Avatar: The Way of Water is a continuation of the first movie and is set sometime after those events. Jake Sully is now a parent to three children with Neytiri, but their lives are uprooted when an old foe returns. The family is forced to seek refuge at a new tribe of water-based Na’vi, where tensions rise with Jake’s past and their children coming to understand the ocean’s dangers and beauty.

Despite not knowing how the sequel would be received, Cameron pushed ahead with Avatar 3 and 4 already. The third movie will feature “Ash People” or fire Na’vi, expanding the world of Pandora and the various tribes of Na’vi present on the planet.

Avatar: The Way of Water is currently in cinemas.
