Sony Re-Launching its China Hero Project

Before COVID-19 struck from the darkness and turned the entire world on its head, Sony had launched the “China Hero Project, ” a program to support Chinese game developers specifically. The project started in 2022 and then came to a close in 2022. Sony invested in seven successive games in the two years it was active, such as F.I.S.T.: Forged In Shadow Torch and Anno: Mutationem.

And now, according to Reuters, Sony has decided to dust the China Hero Project off and revitalize it. The report details that the China Hero Project will invest more than $140,080 into each game funded and support development teams of all sizes. Also, as part of this initiative, Sony will publish two already funded games, the action RPG, Lost Soul Aside and the multiplayer third-person shooter title Convallaria.

This report comes amid Sony and Microsoft squaring off about Game Pass and will be the company’s latest effort to try and establish itself as the largest entity in the Chinese gaming market. Previous Sony secured the popular China-developed game Genshin Impact as a console exclusive, resulting in over 3.5 million PS4 units sold in the country.

Over the last couple of years, leaders in the gaming industry have been fighting to be embraced by China and dethrone the current leader Nintendo Switch. However, they have yet to be successful. Although coming in second to Nintendo has seemed to encourage Sony to try to secure the region, only time will tell if this effort pays off for the industry giant.
